CLEVELAND - The lazy days of summer can often include some really hot and humid days.

According to Tom Waters, M.D., an emergency department physician at Cleveland Clinic, such days can bring on heat illness, which for some, can result in a real medical emergency.

Heat illness includes a wide spectrum of ailments ranging from something as minor as a heat cramp to full-blown heat stroke.

Dr. Waters said heat stroke is an acute life-threatening emergency and can be fatal if left untreated. During heat stroke, the body’s organs can literally shut down from over-heating.

“You don’t want to ignore the signs and symptoms of a heat emergency,” said Dr. Waters. “If you notice that you’re feeling nauseous, you have a headache, you’re feeling a little dizzy or lightheaded, or you notice that a loved one who’s been exposed to the heat is feeling that way, you want to get them out of the heat as soon as possible because you don’t want it to progress to full-blown heat stroke.”

The very young and the elderly are the most at-risk for suffering heat stroke, as well as those who are exposed to the heat either by working or exercising outdoors in hot, humid conditions.

Dr. Waters says that if someone is suffering a heat emergency, the first thing to do is to get them out of the heat and start cooling them. He said the best way to do this is to apply ice packs to the groin and underarm areas.

If they don’t respond to this treatment, they need to be taken to the emergency department as soon as possible.

Dr. Waters said many heat illnesses can be prevented, therefore it’s essential to always be prepared on hot, humid days by drinking water or electrolyte solutions to stay hydrated.

It’s also good to avoid drinking anything that contains alcohol or caffeine, which can cause a person to become more dehydrated.

“Make sure that you’re hydrated,” said Dr. Waters. “Whenever you’re going to be exposed to the heat, you want to make sure you’re hydrated because dehydration in of itself can pre-dispose you to a heat emergency.”
