CLEVELAND - This Father’s Day, there are plenty of men hoping that maybe next year they’ll be celebrating their first as a ‘dad’ as they anxiously try to start a family.
But how long should couples try on their own before seeking the help of a fertility expert?
According to Rebecca Flyckt, M.D., a fertility expert at Cleveland Clinic, often times it depends on a woman’s age.
“After six months of trying, it you’re 35 and older, you really need to seek help from a professional,” said Dr. Flyckt. “If you’re younger than 35 you can take that year that we traditionally recommend.”
Dr. Flyckt said there are some women that should probably seek assistance even sooner.
Women with a history of gynecological problems, cysts, fibroids, endometriosis, or infection should be seen much sooner. The same goes for women who have irregular periods, or a man with risk factors for male fertility problems.
Some people like to use apps and technology to try to track their fertility. Dr. Flyckt said while those are a good place to start for some couples, more meaningful information can be found by looking at things like the structure of the uterus and the tubes, checking for blockages, hormonal problems, ovulatory and sperm problems.
She said that many couples don’t realize that fertility is equally important for both men and women when it comes to getting pregnant.
“A lot of couples are surprised to find that male infertility is just as important as female, in factoring in causes of infertility,” said Dr. Flyckt. “So 30 to 40 percent of the couples that I see will have some identifiable male factor.”
Dr. Flyckt said that trying to get pregnant can often be a stressful time for both men and women. She recommends that whenever possible, it’s helpful for couples to try and reduce their stress in an effort to help them conceive.
