CLEVELAND - Too much sodium can cause high blood pressure and lead to an increased risk of heart disease and stroke.

Large amounts of the sodium we consume come from processed and packaged foods but a new study suggests manufacturers are making progress.

New research shows some packaged store-bought foods contain less sodium today than they did 15 years ago.

“One of the things that was interesting over the 15 years of the study was that the sodium content in condiments, and sauces, dips and salty snacks had decreased by over 100 milligrams,” said Kate Patton, RD of Cleveland Clinic.

Researchers analyzed data on packaged food and beverage purchases from 172,042 American households.

Results show the amount of sodium overall in the purchased foods decreased by 396mg daily, per person.

They also found that the sodium content in the foods that were purchased decreased by 12%.

Patton didn’t participate in the study but said it’s important to note that the research did not look at how much sodium households actually consumed; it only looked at sodium content of products purchased.

She said manufacturers are moving in the right direction, but more can be done.

“One of the things that the study showed was that overall the sodium density, you know, in the foods, so they looked at the sodium content per calorie was still fairly high, so there still is room for manufacturers to use less added sodium in the foods,” said Patton.

According to the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services and the USDA it’s recommended Americans consume less than 2,300mg of sodium per day.
