Tina explains that every debt advice call can vary depending on a client's needs, the information available at the time of a call and how different companies handle their calls with clients. Tina Shortland explains that in her experience she often finds this step can be emotional for clients and stresses for them not to worry if they get upset. The second step is the information gathering phase, the debt adviser will want to know how much the client owes to whom and what kind of debt it is. Tina advises the viewer not to worry if they don't have all the information correct at this stage but the more factual they can be the quicker they can get the important debt advice they need. The debt adviser will also go through an income and expenditure assessment with the client. This will determine what disposable income the client has which is what they would offer to the creditors. Tina stresses it is crucial this is correct regardless of what debt solution the client ends up choosing as they would be committing that payment and therefore need to know they can manage on the budget that has been set. The adviser will also want to know other key information so they can assess what debt solutions the client has available to them based on their circumstances. They will talk through the options with the client, explaining the implications of each and answering any questions. Tina Shortland explains that at this stage of seeking debt advice a client may want time to go off and have a think about their options and discuss it with another person, partner, friend or family member or even have a chat with alternative companies. If the client wishes to proceed the adviser will explain what will happen next, what the stages of the chosen debt solution are, what actions are required of the client and also, very importantly how the client will be kept in contact with and how they can get hold of someone if they need to. Tina stresses that a debt advice call should never end with a client feeling confused or unclear about anything they have discussed or agreed to, so they should ask any questions they have.
